knife Information

This will give you a brief safety guide of how to be safe whilst holding a knife and showing you how to use and handle the knife properly

Knives are useful tools, but they can cause serious injuries if handled carelessly. Follow these basic rules whenever you use, clean, or store a knife.

1. Handle Knives Carefully

  • Always hold a knife by the handle.
  • Keep your fingers away from the blade and cutting edge.
  • Never run, play, or mess around while holding a knife.
  • Keep the blade pointed away from yourself and others.
  • Use a knife only for its intended purpose.

2. Cutting Safely

  • Use a stable, non-slip cutting board.
  • Make sure the knife is sharp and in good condition. A damaged or excessively dull knife can be harder to control.
  • Keep your free hand away from the blade.
  • Cut slowly and deliberately rather than using excessive force.
  • Keep your attention on what you are doing.

3. Passing a Knife

  • Never throw or toss a knife to someone.
  • When handing someone a knife, place it on a safe surface and let them pick it up.
  • If you must pass one directly, offer the handle first and keep the blade pointed away from both people.

4. Cleaning Knives

  • Do not leave knives hidden in soapy water or in a sink.
  • Wash knives carefully, keeping the blade pointed away from you.
  • Dry knives by holding the handle and wiping the blade away from your hands.
  • Store knives safely after cleaning.

5. Storing Knives

  • Keep knives somewhere secure and out of the reach of children.
  • Use a knife block, protective sheath, or another suitable storage system.
  • Never leave a knife loose where someone could accidentally grab the blade.
  • Do not leave knives on the edge of a counter.

6. If a Knife Falls

Never try to catch a falling knife. Step back and let it fall.

7. If You Are Injured

For a minor cut, apply firm pressure with clean material and seek appropriate first aid.

For a deep, severe, or heavily bleeding wound, get urgent medical help. In the UK, call 999 for a life-threatening emergency.

Golden Rule

Treat every knife as if it could cause an injury, even when you are familiar with it. Stop using a knife if you are distracted, rushing, or unsure how to handle it safely.
